The Batman isn’t just giving hope to Gotham City by the end of his movie, but giving hope to a lot of people across the box office. Because a reports are noting, the movie didn’t just get a 3rd weekend at the top of the box office, but it crossed the $300 million mark domestically, as well as being mere inches away from $600 million worldwide. In fact, it’ll be at that mark by the end of today. That’s a very good thing for the box office after struggling mightily due to the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021.
Spider-Man No Way Home obviously still holds the mark for ‘biggest pandemic-era movie’, but The Batman is a strong second, and considering that it still has one more weekend before any kind of competition happens (via fellow comic book movie Morbius), its money revenue is still going to be strong for a while. Whether it makes a billion is very much up in the air, but given that China and other places still aren’t as open as certain countries box office wise…no one would label this movie a failure if it doesn’t reach that goal.
Of course, now the question is that of a sequel. We know that there are going to be various spinoffs of the movie on HBO Max, one of which has already been confirmed via a Penguin spinoff series starring Colin Farrell. So that might be able to fill in the gap before the second movie potentially arrives.
Director Matt Reeves himself noted that sequel talks were going on, but they haven’t been made official as of yet. But, given the critical and fan reception to the film, plus its high box office gross, we’d be stunned if a sequel wasn’t confirmed by the time its box office run ends.
