Sony has released a new 18-minute gameplay trailer for Returnal: Ascension focused on revealing the endless Tower of Sisyphus mode. Players will need to climb a tower filled with progressively threatening enemies in the upcoming expansion. The new footage is a playthrough of the Tower of Sisyphus, described as “an ascending gauntlet of increasingly dangerous phases.” The new mode will have its own story components, as well as reactions from Selene, tailored to how far players have progressed in the Returnal campaign. Check out the full video below.
According to Returnal Game Director Harry Krueger who narrates the new trailer, “We wanted to take the strongest elements of Returnal’s combat and distill them into a very focused package full of intense action. Similar to a lot of the endless modes that we have made in the past, the Tower of Sisyphus also tracks your progress from room to room and phase to phase. There’s also a score that will measure your success in each round, and in order to get the best possible score, you’ll have a multiplier that you need to keep alive as well. We felt that this is a great way to add some depth and replayability to Returnal. A familiar package with an entirely new twist.” Fans should also know that The Tower of Sisyphus will only be accessible as long as players have unlocked the Icarian Grapnel.
The upcoming DLC was first unveiled at Sony’s State of Play earlier this month, showing that Returnal: Ascension will also include a new campaign co-op mode. The PS5 company said on the new mode, “share your entire journey through the shifting labyrinth of Atropos with another player.” It should be noted though, “The Tower of Sisyphus, House sequences, and Challenge Mode are not available in Co-op Mode.”
Returnal: Ascension will be available later this month on March 22, 2022, exclusively on the PS5.
