Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer will include the option to set a character’s skin tone, a first for the series, according to Nintendo Treehouse representative Alison Rapp on Twitter.
In response to a question on Twitter asking if Nintendo’s next entry in the Animal Crossing series would include the option to pick a character’s skin tone, pointing out characters in the E3 2015 trailer with darker pigmentation than the usual pigmentation used in the series, Rapp said, “Good eye! It does.”

Previously, the only way to darken a character’s skin tone was to stand on an island for an extended period of time, effectively giving your character a sun tan. This effect was only temporary, however, and wore off rather quickly.
Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer was officially announced this past April during Nintendo’s April 1 Direct video and will revolve around the player designing homes for the other villagers in town. This will include where their home will be placed in the village, landscaping the area around their home, and more. Previously, players were only able to design the interior décor of their own home in Animal Crossing. It will be released for the Nintendo 3DS on July 30 in Japan, September 25 in North America, and October 2 in Europe.
