Bethesda has revealed to GamesBeat today that its newly released mobile title Fallout Shelter is number 2 on Apple's iOS App Store in the top grossing apps category, beating the likes of Candy Crush Saga and a host of other games that are designed with mechanics to force players to pay real cash in order to make any progress.
Fallout Shelter is perhaps the only non-premium management game available on the iOS that doesn't use these shady monetization mechanics and Bethesda is making a killing from it.
"We're very pleased. Fallout Shelter is doing amazingly well, with no real buildup," Bethesda VP of PR and marketing Pete Hines said. "To take such a light approach to monetization compared to other free-to-play games—We felt like we wanted to err on the side of caution and make it very unobtrusive, make sure it was fun first and foremost. So far so good."
Rather incredible how people will spend money because they want to and not because they're forced to, isn't it?
