Creative Assembly has shared their latest alpha for Total War Warhammer to the press, and even at this early stage the builds are very impressive.
Creative Assembly have gone above and beyond to recreate Games Workshop’s universe, exceeding what they had done for their historical Total War games until now.
They’ve increased the sheer number of unit types and animations, and expanded models to accommodate the humongous foot soldiers of the Green Army, including trolls, giants, and Arachnarok, as well as flying units, such as the griffon mounts of the human faction.
Another change is adding synced animations for combat on top of matched animations. Whereas a matched animation animates two characters together, synced animations sees one character react to their opponent’s action.
For the alpha, press got to play a campaign called The Battle of Blackfire Pass, as the human contingent. The unique hero in this campaign is Emperor Karl Franz, who seeks the Hammer of Sigmar.
To get that hammer, the player has to go through a quest battle, a chain of quests that lead to more items, mounts, abilities, etc. Emperor Franz brought his finest troops and strongest weapons, but his army is grossly outnumbered.
Old fans should not have to worry. Even with all the changes and improvements, the game still feels like Total War at its core. Hopes have now been raised high that Total War Warhammer will be the finest entry in the series yet.
Total War Warhammer is planned for release on Windows and Mac.
