In all the hustle of yesterday's Far Cry 4 information explosion, you might have completely forgotten that the PlayStation TV released in North America. That's right: On October 14, 2014, Sony's miniature console landed on store shelves with nary a peep.
PlayStation TV is essentially a Vita that lacks a screen and must be plugged into a television. By doing this, Sony has been able to bring down the cost of the device significantly — $99.99 for the unit itself, $139.99 for a bundle that includes a DualShock 3. As we've mentioned in the past, PS TV will be able to play both digital and physcial Vita titles, PS One and PSP Classics, PS4 games via Remote Play, and eventually PS3 games via PS Now streaming.
Unfortunately, not all Vita games will be compatible, namely anything that requires the use of the front and reach touch pads. But if you are interested in a lot of what the Vita has to offer but have an aversion to portable hardware, this may be a happy medium. At the very least, it should be a decent companion console if you already happen to own a PS4.
I suspect that PlayStation TV won't be a big seller, considering how little Sony has hyped it up and especially how it launched in America seemingly without anyone noticing. But now you guys know! If you've got the cash, give it some consideration.
