[Correction: I erroneously stated that the photo-sharing workaround allowed you to post screens on Miiverse. The truth is that that isn't possible. What you can do is take SD card with the saved photos, stick it in a computer, and share them across the various social media sites the way you would share any old photo. Sorry for the confusion.]
More bad news for Smash players who don't plan on investing in the New 3DS. We previously learned that Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS will allow the use of the C-stick on the new hardware model for Smash attacks, but owners of the original models won't be able to use the Circle Pad Pro for the same added functionality. Now we learn that you can't even access Miiverse while playing the game on the older models!
Should you try to open Miiverse — or even the Internet Browser — while playing Smash, you'll be greeted by an error message stating that the two can't be active at the same time. In other words, sharing screenshots on Miiverse by suspending your game and entering the social app is not supported. Both Miiverse and the Internet Browser can opened during gameplay on the New 3DS, however, thanks to its beefier CPU.
There is a silver lining to this. As this seems to be a case of insufficient memory, Nintendo is apparently willing to sacrifice certain higher-level OS functions for the sake of beefing up its software. This might be a way to avoid forcing New 3DS exclusivity for otherwise hardware-intensive titles — not in every case, apparently. And besides, there is a workaround to sharing your photos on Miiverse — simply save screenshots to the SD card, close the game, open Miiverse, then upload them. Not as convenient, sure, but the function is not completely lost.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS will be out in the US on October 3. The Wii U version will arrive later in the winter.
