In a rather strange case of "this is a thing that is happening," the so-bad-it's-good Super Mario Bros. movie from 1993 is receiving the Blu-ray treatment, but only in the UK. The film, starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as the Mario brothers and Dennis Hopper as Koopa, had a nightmarish production cycle, which Hoskins would frequently recount as the worst experience of his career. But despite the critical lashing in theaters, it has since gained a cult following.
The Blu-ray release is extra special in that in contains a brand-new 60-minute documentary entitled "This Ain't No Video Game." The documentary team was able to round up many of the old cast and crew, from co-directors Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel to actors Leguizamo and Richard Edson — the latter played Spike. There are also archive interviews featuring Hoskins and producer Jake Eberts, both who passed away in the last few years. It doesn't sound like there are any archives of the late Hopper, unfortunately.
The movie comes out on November 3 and will only play on Region B/2 Blu-ray players. Hopefully we'll hear of an American release soon for those who are interested.
