Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora Will Be A Standalone Story

June 28, 2021 by Dennis Patrick

Don’t expect an adaptation from the iconic Avatar film.

We knew there was an Avatar project being worked on over at Massive Entertainment, however it wouldn’t be until E3 2021 that we got some actual news about the game. During Ubisoft Forward, the stream which was in place to unveil certain video games and announcements alongside the big E3 2021 event, we got the reveal of the official Avatar video game title and even some footage for the title. However, because this is the first look into the game, we didn’t get much in terms of what the studio had in mind.

Avatar was a huge film hit by legendary director James Cameron. While the movie came out several years ago, it was a bit of a surprise to see a video game release. However, more film installments are coming out with the next being in the holiday season of 2022. While this game is not attached to the films, it will be canon and if you want to play around in the world of Pandora then this is a game you won’t want to pass up on.

Recently, VentureBeat had the chance to speak with Disney and Pixar Games vice president, Luigi Priore. During the conversation, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora came up in which Luigi was able to speak a bit about the game. According to the interview, Luigi made note that years ago video games based around films were essentially the movie just in a video game format so you would get a chance to play popular scenes. However, that’s not the trend now and gamers want more such as a new storyline.

That’s what we’re going to get with this game as it’s set to be a new story, a different area of Pandora along with new characters. We don’t know if this means we’ll see any familiar characters from the film that was released in 2009, but at the very least, we know that the developers over at Massive Entertainment are going to provide something unique for fans that will still be considered canon. Again, we’re not given any details about the game quite yet outside of the announcement trailer, but when we do we should get more insight about what this game will involve in terms of its canon narrative.
