PS4 vs Xbox One: ‘Ultimate’ Benchmark Test Shows Specs Gap Between Consoles

July 21, 2014 by Stephen Daly

Someone felt the Console War needed new ammunition it seems.

As the platform war apparently doesn't have enough fuel to feed it already, WCCF Tech has posted what they call the "ultimate" PS4, PC, and Xbox One GPU test.

Below are the specs for the PS4's Pitcairn and the Xbox One's Bonaire GPU but a word of warning first in relation to the Xbox One stats:

"There is the annoying eSRAM to account for, something whose impact is not readily quantifiable. However if the Nintendo Wii with its 32MB of eDRAM and general game performance is any indication we can assume our calculations being skewed by not more than 10% at most. However for the sake of fairness, we won’t do that."

As both GPUs are from AMD, WCCF Tech was able to process the numbers through the equation system here (you can also test your own GPU) and collect the results. Again, the Xbox One's eSRAM causes problems when trying to perform a direct comparison. However, the site notes that even taking eSRAM working at its peak:

"Realistically speaking the absolute maximum performance you can expect is till 32 – 35 Relative points. That is still lower than PS4 because nothing can account for the lower number of Stream Processors which is the heart of GPU horsepower. Bottom Line is, the more developers optimize eSRAM, the more frames and higher resolution you are going to get (32MB eSRAm is theoretically enough for 1080p) but even that has a limit and the PS4 will always remain at an advantage."

The PS4's Pitcairn GPU, while having an advantage over the Xbox One's Bonaire, is still only equivalent to the now obsolete Radeon HD 7850. As the 7850 was was able to output 1080p, that explains the PS4's general ability to have games output at that level compared to the Xbox One.

PC GPUs with the double the power of the PS4s are available for a few hundred dollars more but for console players, it seems the PS4 may have a permanent edge in Resolution Gate.
