Fatal Frame Wii U Revealed, Releasing September 27 In Japan

July 17, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

On livestream, Tecmo scared the heck out of fans with the exciting new trailer, and they shared the details you want to know.

We have new details on the upcoming Fatal Frame Wii U. Let's start with the full trailer here:

The game’s full name is Zero: Nuregarasu no Miko, which translates to Fatal Frame: The Black Haired Shrine Maiden. The main character is Kozukata Yuuri, who has an interesting ability. She can find people who were taken into the spirit world, and bring them back into the land of the living. In a sense, you can think of her like a private eye for ghosts.

The game has an interestingly ironic, somewhat positive theme, the border between life and death. Like I said, this is meant to be taken as a positive theme, evoking thoughts of love, warmth, and reuniting with loved ones. It will also revolve around water, so a lot of locations will have flowing water.

As producer Kikuchi Keisuke says, there are three elements of aZero/Fatal Frame game that will also be present in this one; the fact that ghosts can appear anywhere, old Japanese houses, and the camera.

This last element will take on a new dimension now that you will use the GamePad to take pictures. Furthermore, the game world will apparently be an open area, of sorts. This description falls short of calling it an open world, but it may be close. Keisuke does promise it will have the biggest volume of any game in the franchise, with a lot of work being put in.

This information comes from a livestream from Tecmo Koei, where they also revealed there will be new Fatal Frame movies from both Kadokawa Pictures and Hollywood, under the producer of the Resident Evil movies.

As a humorous final aside, Shigeru Miyamoto was also in the event, and he confessed the only scary game he likes is Luigi’s Mansion. What he’s seen of the new Fatal Frame terrifies him, but he is upbeat about games like it bringing diversity to the Wii U.

Fatal Frame Wii U is releasing September 27 in Japan to Wii U. No, no word for a Western release yet, but I highly doubt Nintendo will hold this one back. You can expect to get the latest info on that here on GameRanx.

Oh yeah, one more thing…
