343 Industries’ Frank O’ Connor has made a revelation for Halo 5: Guardians that may represent a sea change in how the game is played.
So, just a little background. One of the announced features for Guardians are the new Spartan Abilities. These are features, such being able to hijack vehicles, and wielding two weapons.
A fan thought that it meant Armor Abilities would be coming back but Frank made it clear that Armor is not coming back at all.
As a small primer for non-Halo players, Armor Abilities are custom attachments used to enhance the performance of people wearing armor, such as those of the Spartans, ForeRunners, etc. Many longtime fans hate many of these abilities for fundamentally changing how Halo played compared to before. For example, Armor Lock in Halo Reach, which locks a player in place and temporarily makes them invincible, is unpopular for being nearly gamebreaking.
I’m sure some players will defend Armor Abilities, but for better and worse, 343 Industries has opted for a throwback of sorts. Halo games made their reputation before Armor Abilities, so some fans are already looking forward to playing something like that again. Or could we be expecting too much far ahead? What if Guardians breaks up Halo's gameplay more radically in other ways?
