Mirror’s Edge 2 E3 2014 Update Promises A New Faith For New Generation

June 9, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

They are retooling the parkour, environments, combat, story, everything.

EA has shared more details on the development of Mirror’s Edge 2. As they put it, the game is a redefining of Mirror’s Edge, and of Faith herself.

EA revealed their building blocks for Faith: the black, white, and red color scheme.  All of this, including the iconic glove, were retained for the new game.

For of Mirror’s Edge 2, they’re going for a minimalistic, edgy design aesthetic. Faith has a very controlled, deliberate look around her, to reflect her life and the world she lives in. The freedom she enjoys as a Runner contrasts the controlled limiting world she is in, but her clothes match that limitation. Also a runner, Faith is a very strong person, someone you don’t want to get into a scrap with. This was a feeling they wanted to evoke in her clothing as well.

In terms of parkour, they retooled the game engine again, consulting once again with the world’s best parkour artists. They improved Faith’s existing moveset and expanded upon it as well. The world itself has also been tweaked, for players to feel free in moving around the game world and finding their way. As a result, beginners can find safer routes, while speedrunners can literally find the quickest ways around.

Interestingly enough, the world has also been reworked to fit combat, with certain areas conducive to sneak attacks, for example. Combat itself has been reworked towards Faith’s capabilities.

EA wants us to think of Faith as a projectile: she hits quick, fast, and hard, and she keeps on moving. I’m almost tempted to say that she could be her own 1st person shooter.

EA is redefining the role of the runners as well, with an eye towards expanded gameplay and story.

In the end, EA promises a new Faith for a new generation, perhaps a semi-confession that they sat on Mirror’s Edge 2 for too long, but they intend to make good.

We’ll share more information on Mirror’s Edge 2 as it is revealed. For now, you can watch the conceptual development video here.
