Mass Effect 4: Plot Fan Theory

May 21, 2014 by Yesika Reyes

One fan has an interesting theory about the next Mass Effect game.

One Reddit user shared an ambitious theory regarding the next Mass Effect game. While it's not likely BioWare will take this course of action, it seems to be a plausible course based on the reception in the comments.

You can read the entire fan theory here:

During the Reaper war, an influential and massively rich business owner (not necessarily sure who) decided that they needed a an escape from the impending death of all organic life. So they gather together as many scientists as they can and set them to work modifying a mass relay. The goal is to find a way to change its destination; specifically, force it to send ships to the Andromeda galaxy.

The head of this project gathers their closest friends and family, plus mercenaries for protection and tonnes of raw materials for trading purposes, and sets of in secret (not wanting the Reapers to follow, who knows how thorough those things are). Mass Effect 4 would tell the story of this group's arrival in Andromeda, and the player character would be one of the mercenaries and preferably have full control over race, gender, class etc. I know it's unlikely that this is what BioWare has planned, but I wanted to share the idea because I think it could really be fantastic for a number of reasons.

  • The game would be totally unaffected by the player's choice of ending in Mass Effect 3, because that only effected the Milky Way. Also Commander Shepard could be mentioned in passing but none of his/her decisions would need to be passed over.
  • The game wouldn't have to be set in the distant past or future, meaning we'd still be able to have Humans, Turians, Asari etc, just in smaller numbers.
  • We'd have an entirely new galaxy full of secrets and mysteries and characters to explore. It would be like a return to that wonder and awe we experienced during Mass Effect 1.
  • It would be easy to avoid spoiling the previous trilogy, so if BioWare played its cards right newcomers would be able to play the older games without too many spoilers.

I've been thinking about this stuff a lot lately, let's hope we finally get a look at ME4 next month at E3.

We reccently reported developments regarding the upcoming game from earlier this month and on April.
