We rundown the week’s batch of Super Smash Bros screens, as shared by lead producer Masahiro Sakurai on Miiverse.
On Monday, he shared another screenshot of wireframe Little Mac, straight out of the arcade version of Punch-Out! Sakurai also shared an interesting piece of trivia here, as he revealed Shigeru Miyamoto (then Nintendo’s head artist) drew the pixelart for the wire frame himself.
On Tuesday, we received a new picture of Charizard showing off his special attack, Flare Blitz. Flare Blitz does exist in the Pokemon games, introduced in Generation IV, and it isn’t actually unique to Charizard. Sakurai carries over a particular effect: if Charizard strikes an opponent, he will receive recoil damage. One wonders if other effects were carried over too: Flare Blitz can thaw frozen targets, and it has a 10 % chance of burning them as well. He also shared an extra picture of Mega Charizard X, confirmed as Final Smash.
On Wednesday, Sakurai revealed that Brittany from Pikmin 3 has been delegated to a trophy. Not great news for fans, and it seems like Olimar won’t be switchable with other astronauts in the new game.
On Thursday, we got to see Color TV-Game 15 in action. Sakurai again shares a history lesson, explaining that this Pong game was released in 1977, far before Taito came out with Space Invaders. The Smash team replicated a peculiarity of Color TV-Game 15, so that the paddles move at a constant speed across predetermined paths. This should make them easy to predict, and hopefully, the ball easy to avoid. One wonders if Color TV-Game 15 will actually be playing out a game between matches, as this screenshot shows a different score than the 1st time we saw it.
Lastly, we go back to Friday, and his reveal of the different playable Villagers. We already went through this in some detail, so you can read more about it here.
Super Smash Bros arrives for the 3DS this summer, and for the Wii U winter of this year.
