Canadian developer Minority Inc. has announced Cali during a Game Developer Conference panel attended by GameInformer.
Cali is a tale of tragic love set in South America before the arrival of European conquerers and creative director Vander Caballero teased that the game is about what it's like to fall in love with an AI avatar. The game was announced during a lecture entitled "Empathetic games are here to stay! What's next?" but Caballero declined to provide specific platform launch details or when more information about Cali might be revealed.
However, a listing on the Canadian Media Fund website states that the game is in development for iOS, Android, and 'Cloud' devices. The game's description reads:
"It tells the story of Massi, a teenager caught up with his peers for the Sacred Rite, a centuries-old tradition that sends the strongest adolescent boys to the Second Sun. In a tragic mix of circumstances, Massi is separated from the group.
"As Massi, players will navigate to the Second Sun with the help of Cali, a beautiful and mysterious creature called a pixan, with features of both a majestic butterfly and shy human girl. And while Cali is the secret to Massi's future success, there is a deadly reason why she cannot, or will not, help."
The studio was awarded over $675,000 by the CMF for Cali's development.
Minority is also developing Silent Enemy, a game which focuses on the experience of being bullied while growing up. That game is set in a land of perpetual winter in which players take on the role of a young boy seeking spring. Cali is the second Minority game to be set in South America; Papo & Yo, available on PS3 and Steam, saw player venture through a favela in an unnamed Latin American city.
