Techradar claims they have a source that has confirmed Sony’s Playstation 4 VR headset is set to be unveiled at GDC 2014.
We will be upfront with you about covering a similar rumor just last month. The headset was apparently supposed to come out at the Consumer Electronics Show, along with Valve’s first batch of Steam Machines, that did make an appearance. We will be the first to tell you to read this rumor with a skeptical eye.
Assuming you have decided to trust Techradar and their source, the source also claims that the said VR technology looks very impressive, quality and resolution wise. The source continues that the headset was purposely delayed so that Sony could polish development that much more. This does bolster the possibility that the headset was to be revealed at CES, but Sony changed their mind for a big reveal.
It will be interesting if all of this turns out to be true. Of course, given Sony’s track record for motion controls and other console peripherals, one wonders if PS4 VR, even very impressive VR, really has consumer demand to back it up. Oculus VR, Valve, and others want to tell us VR is now better than ever before, but much like the hype for wearable tech, it’s up in the air if this is something that people will really want to buy.
Techradar did not get a response from Sony regarding the rumor, so who knows if it’s true or not? GDC will begin March 17, so it won’t be long before we know for sure.
