Scraps Kickstarter Promises To Bring Mad Max-Style Vehicular Chaos Back To Life

December 3, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

New Zealand-based Moment Studios wants you to build your own demolition derby fightcar worthy of the scrap heap.

Tell me if you’ve heard this one before: you’re playing a game where you start out with a dump of a car, you build it up with weapons, and go out and take out other cars with it. Sounds familiar?

Yes, that’s partly the plot of Mad Max on the NES, but it’s also the newest novel idea off of Kickstarter! Scraps promises that you will be able to build up your own sandbox demolition derby vehicle, to take out someone else’s ugly monster rig, in a realistic physics environment.

Bill Borman from New Zealand-based Moment Studio cites Interstate ’76, Stratosphere: Conquest of the Skies, and LEGO Racers as inspiration, but for old fogeys like me, the promise of building up a piece of junk that destroys other cars has been around since 1990, when Mindscape had you playing the wild Aussie, scrounging for fuel and repairs everywhere he went.

In Scraps, fortunately, you won’t have to spend tedious hours scrounging around for parts, or fuel. This time you can actually strategize, as certain parts work well together, and you can take enemy parts after you’ve ruined their vehicles. Moment Studios also promises to have robust building and testing modes, so you know for sure you’ve built up your car like you intended.

They’ve raised $ 12,739 (New Zealand dollars) of their $ 23,000 goal, and need to have raised the rest by December 18. If they can pull it off, they intend to port the game to Windows, Mac and Linux, to be delivered July next year. If you’d like to bring the dream of Australian outback inspired vehicular destruction to fruition, in video game form, please click here to support the Kickstarter. You can also go here to vote for them on Steam Greenlight, and check out their pitch below.
