Play A Harder Pokemon X And Y Without Going Full Nuzlocke

October 28, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

Don’t want to play Pokemon like a kid, or like a tournament contestant? We have a ruleset that’s just right.

Hey, are you an older Pokemon player? Do you find Pokemon X and Y too easy, and want to ramp up the difficulty a bit? Do you also find Nuzlocke to be way too high, and looking for a nice middle where the game gives you some decent challenge? We have a ruleset for you.

This comes from a fan whose point of view is Nuzlockes can be fun but feel unnatural to be considered normal gameplay. You have to deliberately avoid resources and just do things that plain don’t make sense in the game world.

So, the point of this ruleset is to make it more appealing to older players, but not to the level where you’re preparing for tournaments. Here we go:

  • Do not use Lucky Egg and turn off Exp. Share.
  • Use Battle Style Shift, not Set.
  • Do not overlevel one Pokemon.
  • Avoid evolving as much as possible. The upside is new moves come quicker, and it is more satisfying to not have a Mega until you reach the final Team Flare dungeon.

Here are some additional optional rules you can season to taste:

  • Optimize the level of affection for your team, AKA use Pokemon-Amie to its maximum. Aside from being an excuse to get cute with your Pokemon, it gives you just the right amount of experience to keep you competitive, but won’t make you overpowered.
  • Set aside a Pokemon team just for collecting other Pokemon. The team should have a Sweet Scenter, a Digger, a False Swiper, two HM Slaves, and one or two Status Inducers. You can also use this team to go to optional areas like the Battle Chateau. The idea here is with a b team, your main team doesn’t get overpowered just because you like going around to collect so much.
