A number of UK retailers have relayed messages from Sony to consumers informing those who may not yet have pre-ordered a PS4 that doing so now will not guarantee they receive the console at launch.
ShopTo originally posted the message: "Sony have confirmed all PlayStation 4 pre-orders from 6th August will now not be guaranteed for launch. You can still pre-order PS4 with us in case we receive cancellations and can fulfill your order for launch."
The website informed Eurogamer that the instructions came directly from Sony and apply to all European retailers.
Amazon followed shortly after ShopTo with a similar message: "Please note – due to high demand, orders placed for the PlayStation 4 console from 6th August may be received after release date. We will ship orders as soon as we receive sufficient inventory."
Sony has not officially commented on the pre-order situation for Europe but it seems there's plenty of demand in the region for their next console which made lead to shortages following the launch later this year.
The PlayStation 4 is due to be released this Holiday but Sony has not yet provided a definitive launch date. We may have confirmation of that at the company's gamescom press conference on August 20th.
