FGC agrees in enforcing penalties for player collusion

July 31, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

New terms agreed upon by tournament organizers, SRK and Eventhubs.

Shoryuken has recently revealed that major tournament organizers of the fighting game community have agreed to a standardized rule punishing cases of player collusion. This resolves a major problem that has plagued the community in tournaments, where players agree with each other to drop matches so that one of them can go on to finish tournaments.

Often, collusion happens in the FGC without malice, as people in the community are very close to each other and will often enter into these agreements as friends. Of course, the practice is unethical, and hurts the community's integrity.

Basically, everyone is now going to use EVO's rules against player collusion, which automatically disqualifies all the players involved from the tournament. Consequently, they forfeit any prizes and titles they would have earned in said tournament.

The tournament organizers who have agreed to adopt these rules are as follows:

  • Evolution Championship Series (Includes all Road to Evo events)
  • Big E Gaming Events (Northeast Championships, Summer Jam, and Winter Brawl)
  • Canada Cup Gaming (Canada Cup, April Duels)
  • Community Effort Orlando
  • Civil War
  • East Coast Throwdown
  • The Fall Classic
  • Final Round
  • Level|Up Events (SoCal Regionals, Wednesday Night Fights, and The Runback)
  • MTLSF Events
  • Northwest Majors
  • Shadowloo Showdown
  • NorCal Regionals
  • Toronto Top Tiers (TORYUKEN, Canadian East Coast Championships)
  • Treta Championship
  • Ultimate Fighting Game Tournament
  • Armshouse
Subsequently, gaming sites Shoryuken.com and Eventhubs have agreed that they will only cover tournaments that use and prominently display this rule, and gaming peripheral maker and FGC supporter Madcatz have also expressed support for this move.

Now, here are the nitty-gritty details. The person who gets to decide whether players are guilty of collusion is the Tournament Director. Players who conspicuously underperform in certain matches are often accused of collusion, but of course, these judgements are subjective. How can you judge whether a person is underperforming in a match with a friend for other reasons? How can you tell if a player is just nervous, or has issues with his controller, or a myriad of other reasons? While I'm sure individual directors will use their best judgement, the rule is general enough that it's completely up to the director's discretion, irregardles if he or she can provide a reasonable explanation for their decision.

We do support this move by the community towards transparency and hope the rule isn't put to the test too severely in upcoming tournaments, as hopefully players will simply decide not to even try.
