God of War Midgard Mishaps Showcases the Insights From the Santa Monica QA Team

October 23, 2018 by Jordan Biazzo

The work of a game developer is never done

God of War is one of 2018’s best title so far, and developer Sony Santa Monica put in a lot of hard work to make that a reality.

Curt Markwardt QA Lead at Santa Monica Studio took to the PlayStation Blog to bring viewers a little insight into behind the scene work that the quality assurance employees go through. From the official release of the game, you wouldn’t think any of this would be possible because the game was nearly perfect in terms of glitches and bugs, but it wasn’t always like that.

Check out the Midgard Mishaps video down below:

Curt Markwardt QA Lead at Santa Monica Studio:

Unless you’ve worked in the game industry, when you think of the effort that goes on behind the scenes of creating a AAA game, QA is not typically at the forefront of your mind. As a studio, we strive to specialize in the craft of creating characters, worlds and stories for you, the player, to experience and explore.

A crucial part of that is the ability to immerse you in those worlds and that immersion is immediately broken each time you encounter a bug that jars that experience, reminding you that you are “just” playing a game. The irony here is that, if we do not do our job well, it will be painfully obvious, but… if we do our job well, you will likely never notice. Instead, you’ll just get to experience what our passionate developers intended – an uninterrupted, engrossing, emotional and rewarding experience.

Gamers, like myself, often forget the work that goes on behind the scenes to bring some of our favorite games to life. And we’re so quick to criticize what should have been, but never take a step back and see how detail, complex mechanics, and how much developer work that goes into them. Games have always been a marvel, but the current industry is something truly amazing, and gamers all around should take some time to appreciate the hard work that goes into making them.

God of War is now available exclusively for the PS4. Did you get a chance to play the critically acclaimed title? If not, I would highly recommend it. Let us know in the comments below if you’ve encountered any funny glitches in God of War with your time with the game!
