Electronic Arts seems to be slowly playing their hand, dropping hints that they intend to raise prices for their games for the upcoming generation. The big tip comes from UK game distributor GAME, on their Playstation 4 FAQ page. As they say, the only AAA game developer who has confirmed their next generation pricing policy is EA, who will be pricing their games at 54.99 pounds, or roughly $ 80.
Sony has previously gone on record that they will not be raising prices for their games, but all consoles are allowing third party publishers to set their own prices. Based on this news, some outlets are already speculating EA games will have the same prices for Xbox One, and that they will similarly raise prices in the US. However, EA has yet to come on record to officially react to this news so this remains in the realm of highly likely speculation.
All signs have been pointing to increased production costs for next generation gaming, not only because the new games are leveraging the consoles' technical capabilities, but also because AAA development has been moving away from the mid-tier and towards high risk, high budget productions. EA has also previously pledged that they would no longer be using online passes, and confirming this after Microsoft reversed their Xbox One DRM policy.
In light of all of this, EA may think they have found due cause to raise prices. They may be willing to risk having less buyers to ensure each unit sale is profitable. Would you be willing to pay extra for games like Plants vs Zombies:Garden Warfare or Battlefield 4? Feel free to sound off in the comments
