Dave Cox tweeted pictures of himself beta testing the Oculus Rift for upcoming MercurySteam game Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2. Cox was clearly enthusiastic about entering Dracula's castle via the VR glasses for the first time, and getting to approach Carmilla.
Set for release later this year, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 continues the tale of Gabriel Belmont from the first game and the 3DS side story Mirror of Fate. Resurrected and taking on the name Dracul, Gabriel Belmont will be battling both the forces of Satan and the Brotherhood of Light, aka the Belmont clan and his own son, Alucard. The game will have him traversing both his own castle as well as a modern day city.
Really, though, MercurySteam joins an already large list of developers interested in the VR headset. Although Valve recently added Oculus Rift support to the Source SDK 2013, for the most case, games will have to be individually developed for the platform. A consumer 'Rift 2.0' version is still in development, and won't be available until at least next year. Dev kits go for $ 300, and consumer units are expected to go for at least below that price.
And that long wait does not guarantee that the peripheral will be officially supported in the game. Nonetheless, MercurySteam may also be looking at using it for future games or developing other games around it.
On the side, Cox did casually confirm Carmilla will be returning to the game although she apparently died in the first game. Lords of Shadow 2 will round up the story of the rebooted franchise. You can read more details about the game here.
