Slightly Mad Studios just released a new trailer for upcoming racing sim project C.A.R.S. Titled 'Speed and Sound', the trailer has the flash and pizzazz of a Gran Turismo trailer. It takes pains to point to details such as flame and smoke effects from the exhaust, light reflection, the dust that rises while a car goes drifting, and all manner of atmospheric effects. The trailer also makes it a point to mention the game's community assisted development, and bluntly shows off the number of licensed cars.
project C.A.R.S. is Slightly Mad Studios' first truly independent effort, and the first project to be funded via what they are calling the World of Mass Development or WMD model. In contrast to Kickstarter or indiegogo campaigns, WMD will give funders a more direct involvement in the game's development, practically making them part of the production staff. The campaign has allowed Slightly Mad Studios to raise as much as 2.35 million pounds, helping cover licenses as well as development costs.
However, the project hit a snag a few months ago as UK's Financial Services Authority (FSA) placed the project, and in particular the WMD, under investigation. The FSA's final decision on the WMD model may affect more than the game. If it receives the go-ahead signal other crowdfunding projects, not just games, will get some legal clout to attempt the same model.
In contrast to other racing sims that emphasize grinding, C.A.R.S. will be utilizing a Franchise Mode. All cars will be available from the start and players will be free to make a career in one particular motorsport, or across several, as they choose. Other aspects of the game continue to be shaped by backers in what the company calls community assisted development.
project C.A.R.S. is slated to release on PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U. You can read our prior coverage of Slightly Mad Studios here.
