In this latest PS4 video, the Blacklight Retribution developers discuss the evolution of free-to-play titles and the relationship built with Sony and the PS4.
If you downloaded the free-to-play PC version of Blacklight Retribution, then you will recognize the structure for the upcoming PS4 release. As players participate in matches, earn points and kill enemies, points slowly accumulate for spending on items available in the in-game store. With the points, players can select from a number of different weapons, attachments, equipment, etc., to improve their character. The catch, most of your purchases only remain available for a set duration of time.
In order for players to permanently acquire weapons and equipment, you can keep playing matches until you accumulate enough points to eventually purchase your weapon of choice. If you find that you don't earn enough points at a quick enough pace, spending real dollars will speed up the process. Since Blacklight Retribution will launch as a free-to-play model, expect the same pay structure.
To make the transition to PS4 possible, Sony and Zombie Studios discussed the protocols that would allow free-to-play studios to release updates with content and fixes in a timely manner. Sony's willingness to simplify the updating process easily allows developers to keep games up to date on all platforms.
Blacklight Retribution will release alongside the PS4 launch this November.
