Nintendo always seems to pull through. Even when it seems like the company’s hardware just isn’t powerful enough, or the third-party support isn’t there, Nintendo somehow finds a way to not only turn a profit, but also innovate. The Wii U hasn’t done well for the Mario maker up to this point, and in many industry veterans’ eyes, this looks to be the last home console to be released by Nintendo. However, GameStop is urging the industry to not count the Big N out just yet.
Speaking with GameSpot, GameStop president Tony Bartel came out to defend the Wii U and its future in the marketplace. We may not be able to see its viability right now, but the main man behind the retailer believes in what Nintendo’s doing.
"Definitely don’t count the Wii U out," Bartel said.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard key players in gaming come out to support the Wii U. Warren Spector, who seems to have a soft spot for Nintendo, also stated that he sees plenty of hope in the console. To Spector, you underestimate Nintendo “at your peril.”
But what about the system makes it appealing? Bartel believes that games like Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. will do the trick.
"They are also launching several games later this year, so we expect to see a lot of interest from consumers as we head into the holidays," Bartel said.
No one really wants to see Nintendo struggle, so we can only hope that Bartel’s confidence in the company isn’t misplaced.
