In a leaked GameStop memo obtained by Game Trailers it was revealed that the retailer has been asked by Sony to accept "unlimited" PlayStation 4 pre-orders with the memo commenting "the flood gates are open".
In its instructions to stores GameStop noted "Starting now, through this weekend and until further notice, Sony has allowed us to take unlimited pre-orders beyond your current allotments. In other words, the flood gates are open for PS4 system reserves, we will let you know when to stop pre-ordering based on limited quantities."
Earlier this week SCEA president Jack Tretton said GameStop plan to buy "every single unit" Sony can produce while SCEI CEO Andrew House has commented that "demand may now outstrip supply" following the positive reaction to the company's pre-E3 media briefing.
While Microsoft has since abandoned many of its controversial Xbox One policies to bring the system more in line with PS4 it seems Sony are not anticipating a significant change in their raised forecasts.
GameStop stores are believed to have several times more PS4s for the launch of that system than Xbox One units with one employee revealing that his "low volume" shop has 86 PS4s allocated.
Earlier this week GameStop ceased Xbox One pre-orders having reached their allotment however more consoles were made available after Microsoft's U-turn on Wednesday over the Xbox One's internet and used game policies.
It has been rumoured that Microsoft are having eSRAM yield difficulties with Xbox One which has reportedly delayed their production of the system and may explain why there will be fewer consoles available at launch.
The PS4 is set to be released later this year with European retailers suggesting a mid-November release date for the console. Sony plan to sell the PS4 for $399, $100 cheaper than the Xbox One.
