John Kodera, the President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment recently made some interesting statements regarding Sony’s business plans moving forward this year.
Notably, Kodera stated that the “PS4 is entering final phase of its life cycle, which would have negative impact to the unit, but recurring revenue via membership services etc should cushion some of that.”
The PS4 has been out since 2013, which, if we match to the lifespan of the previous consoles, its pretty obvious that the console is nearing the end of its lifespan. That being said it is interesting to note that the head of Sony has acknowledged this. Could it mean that a new console release is sooner than anticipated?
Alongside this interesting statement, Kodera mentioned, the PSVR, First-party titles and the PlayStation Vue: “PSVR growing, but industry’s growth is below market expectations. PS Vue is facing harder-than-expected competitions. Vue and PSVR would aim for further growth with realistic outlook,” and “Beefing up first-party titles wouldn’t just mean more new IPs. Strategy includes franchising successful IPs and refreshing existing IPs”.
