As anyone who plays Halo 4 knows, the game's developers at 343 Industries are busy fine-tuning each of the weapons for competitive matchmaking and Tournament play. This May, the developers will be inviting a small group of community members to the studio to take a sneak preview of the new weapon tuning.
There will also be a live stream that will allow everyone to check out the tuning in advance before the settings deploy globally. The live stream will feature "insight and commentary" from the designers, as well as gameplay from community members and staff at 343. They spoke to superfan and 3-time Halo national champion Dave "Walshy" Walsh to get his input on the changes they've made to the game thus far.
In regards to the weapons, Walshy was upbeat and positive about the changes, stating that the Battle Rifle being a 4-shot "makes it a force to be reckoned with," and that the DMR is no longer the "go-to choice for top players," as it has been in the past. The decreased magnetism, he says, adds more skill to short-ranged fights, and meanwhile, the LightRifle's increased rate of fire while zoomed in will "possibly make it the best long-range starting weapon in the game."
Asked what his thoughts were on how these tuning updates will affect both Matchmaking and tournament play, Walshy was optimistic that both forms of play would see more variance with starting weapons.
"Biggest difference in my opinion will be in the short and long-range game since the DMR currently is the go-to weapon for almost every situation," he said. "With the updates to the BR and LR, we now have weapons that, on paper, are superior to the DMR. I'm excited for this change and am excited to see how it changes the game!"
