Middleware technology developer Geomerics has put together something called "Enlighten", a lighting engine that is capable of making full use of the PlayStation 4's graphical capabilities. They plan to showcase the software at the Game Developer's Conference later this month.
Enlighten serves as a solution (by which I mean, it's a useful tool) for game developers to illuminate and light scenes in their games in a very specific manner without having to wrangle up the math on their own. The lighting engine, which operates in tandem with DICE's Frostbite 2 engine has been used in Battlefield 3, Need for Speed: The Run, and the upcoming Dragon Age 3.
Geomerics co-founder Chris Doran says that Enlighten offers game developers with a high quality solution for adding filters to their games and giving them a distinctive look—options which would be otherwise difficult to configure manually. The engine's latest update includes advanced shadow support, reflections, and lighting, all of which is on display in the company's newest trailer. Check that out below.
