If you played PC games around the turn of the millenium, Black Isle had your back covered. They were your friends. Their games provided the video game equivalent of bailing you out of jail or driving you to the airport. Chief among their successes is Planescape: Torment, high up on any list of games with excellent narrative from anywhere whose opinion counts. It never received a sequel, but that’s maybe about to change with Torment: Tides of Numenera.
Now, thanks to Kickstarter, there’s the chance of seeing another game that may fill the void left in it’s wake. Torment: Tides of Numenera is a game that’s focused on providing the same experience that players found in the original Torment. It’s being put together by the team at inXile, previously known for their Kickstarter of Wasteland 2 (which has yet to be released, but is due out this year).
The kickstarter is quick to inform that this is not a continuation of the story of Planescape: Torment. It features new characters in a world that differs from the AD&D based setting in the other, is instead taking place in the world of Numenera, created by the world designer of the original Planescape. It’ll feature much of the same tone and style, but will have new gameplay systems that attempt to subvert the expectations of the genre in a way that echos the subversion from the previous game.
Think about backing if you’d like to revisit some old memories in a new form, or if you’ve never played the first and think the new pitch sounds good.
