Sony has reached the fifth week of its six-week PlayStation Mobile New Years Giveaway. But all is not as it seems. If you were expecting that the penultimate week would be the second-best title of the lineup of free games, building up to a climax for next week, you'd be wrong; despite the title of the blog post “Six weeks of free PlayStation Mobile gaming – update 5”, this week's giveaway, downloadable from the PS Store on your Vita or PlayStation-certified mobile device for free, isn't even a game at all.
Beats Trellis is actually a “portable music creation app”:
“Using a simple grid based interface, Beats Trellis gives you a palette of instruments, drum kits and breakbeats, allowing you to create music patterns and play them back live.”
So it sounds kind of like GarageBand, only not as good, though I suppose beggars can't be choosers. According to the product description, it has 16 instrument tracks, 8 drum kit tracks, 8 breakbeat tracks, 15 instrument voices, 6 drum kits, and 6 breakbeats. If that sounds good to you, go ahead and download it; it's free for the next week.
PlayStation Mobile is in a bit of a state. While I'm able to download Beats Trellis for free, no one has yet bothered to update the store so that the PlayStation Mobile New Year Giveaway banner actually points to the game; instead, it directs me to last week's Aqua Kitty – Milk Mine Defender, now £2.79. But Beats Trellis isn't hard to find, once you know it's not a game. As far as my Vita is concerned, though it may be different for people outside of the U.K., while PlayStation Mobile has around 50 games it only has the one app.
