This move to both incorporated Battle Royale into Fortnite, as well as providing the title as free-to-play, seems to be the best strategy Epic has employed in a while, the publisher announced via Twitter that upon launch the game hit 1 million players.

Judging by player’s perceptions of the title, it seems like the Battle Royale mode is an absolute winner, with one user pointing out two distinct improvements from PUBG in Fornite:
‘Things I noticed when playin fortnite BR compared to PUBG
1) No initial lag when players are landing
2) Optimization is perfect on max settings, whereas I have to run PUBG on all very low with maxed out view distance on a 980 TI SLI
Both are fun games with different play styles.’
