While the Wii U managed to move more than 400,000 units in December alone, that's nothing compared to the Xbox 360. Microsoft has just announced that their console closed out 2012 as the best-selling console in the United States. In December alone, Microsoft managed to move 1.4 million units of the Xbox 360, which is more than double the amount of the second-place console in the U.S. in the same timeframe.
Additionally, that makes it the 24th consecutive month the Xbox 360 has held the number one spot in the country. For the whole month of December, Microsoft states that the Xbox 360 generated more than $1.27 billion at retail, which includes games, accessories and consoles.
Keep in mind that even with Microsoft's chest-thumping in effect, data from IDC states that worldwide shipments of the PS3 has surpassed that of the Xbox 360 for the first time this console generation. And with the PS3 having a lot more exclusives out this year compared to the Xbox 360, I suspect that gap might be widening more soon.
Could this be Microsoft's last record-setting year for the Xbox 360 before the Xbox 720 gets revealed at E3? That might very well be the case and we'll see a new console champ come December of 2013.
