Ken Levine: ‘BioShock Infinite’ Wouldn’t Work As Anything Other Than An FPS

January 3, 2013 by Ian Miles Cheong

Ken Levine expresses his thoughts on BioShock Infinite’s first person viewpoint.

BioShock Infinite is one of the most anticipated games of the year, and it's with good reason, as the game's predecessors—BioShock and BioShock 2—were among two of the most engrossing first person shooters of their time. The former title is regarded as offering one of the best stories to ever be told in a videogame, due to its mature storyline and its critique of Ayn Rand's Objectivist philosophy.

Neither of these games would be as well regarded as they are were it not for the fact that they were developed as first person shooters. Answering a question on a Reddit "Ask Me Anything" session, Irrational Games creative director Ken Levine says that the first person perspective helped to bring life into the BioShock universe because it allows the player to find themselves deeply immersed within the setting.

"I love first person because it gets you so close to the detail of the world," Levine said. "[BioShock Infinite] wouldn't work in any other perspective."

While it's hard to imagine BioShock in anything other than from the first person view, I think it would be an interesting challenge for both Irrational Games and Ken Levine should they ever tire of making first person shooters.

BioShock Infinite is set for release early this year on the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.
