Crysis 3 to Be a Benchmark Experience for at Least Two Years, Claims Crytek CEO

December 21, 2012 by Alex Co

Cevat Yerli, CEO of Crytek, thinks that Crysis 3 will be a "benchmark" experience for at least two years.

Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli hasn't been shy in expressing that Crysis 3 will be the best-looking console game released so far. Just last week, he even commented that Crysis 3 is "maxing" out consoles and how there's not even 1% percent left for them to squeeze out.

If that's not enough, in an interview with GamesBeat, Yerli is even claiming that Crysis 3 on PC will be a "benchmark experience" for at least the next two years.

Crysis 3 on PC is going to be a benchmark experience for at least two years. When I see what’s happening on the PC market, and even what we do. The PC market is not going to grow vastly more before a lot of games catch up. We had the same thing with the first Crysis on PC. When Crysis launched, it was the high-end benchmark for a good three years. I think Crysis 3 is going to do that again.

Yerli doesn't stop there. In the same interview, he states that he doesn't think Epic's Unreal Engine 4 can do Crysis 3 on consoles right now, that Crysis 3 on the PC is comparable to what next-gen consoles will be offering since it's a "next-gen PC game."

I honestly think that Unreal Engine 4 would not be able to do Crysis 3 on consoles right now. The PC version could do it, maybe, but it would call for a higher PC spec. CryEngine 3 is capable of doing anything Unreal Engine 4 can. We don’t need to tick up the number to CryEngine 4.

As far as next-gen console games, I think Crysis 3 on the PC will be very comparable. Because it’s a high-end PC title, implicitly it’s a next-gen game. It’s just a next-gen PC game.

While there's no denying Crysis 3 is looking fantastic so far, are Yerli's statements too farfetched or is Crysis 3 just that impressive on a technical level?

From a purely technical standpoint, do you think Crytek's CryEngine 3 can hang with Epic's Unreal Engine 4? If given the choice, which game engine would you want a game be developed on?

Crysis 3 is set for release in February 19, 2013 for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.
