Here’s a really cool mobile accessory from the peripheral developers, Hyperkin: a Gameboy color cartridge adapter, dubbed Smartboy.
Essentially the device clips onto your phone and allows you to plug in your dusty old cartridges. It features the same retro style buttons as the original Gameboy Color and will be compatible with NTSC/PAL region cartridges. Unfortunately, the device is only for Android/Samsung consumers, specifically designed for the Samsung S8 or other higher up models.
Check out the official specifications below:
- Plays GB and GBC cartridges, compatible with NTSC/ PAL cartridges
- Classic-style tactile button set, upscale to phone’s resolution, does not require batteries
- Designed for Samsung’s S8 line and up (other Android device compatibility may vary)
- Phone Size: 5.2 – 6 inches, USB Type-C port
- The Smart Boy is compatible with other apps and games, including GBA apps from Google Play. Configuration for such apps may vary.
There are very limited details regarding the peripheral besides the Amazon listing, however, we should hear some more details in the months coming. For now, interested buyers can pre-order the SmartBoy, here.
What do you think about this accessory? Worth the purchase, or will you stick to using emulators? Let us know in the comments. The SmartBoy will release August 21, 2017.
