Apogee Software has released a new developer diary for their upcoming reboot of Rise of the Triad.
Rise of the Triad was originally supposed to be an expansion for Wolfenstein 3D. However, the game was suddenly cancelled by id Software. It was believed and still is, that the Wolfenstein expansion was cancelled because Doom was about to be released and they didn't want to take any attention away from it. After the release from Apogee Software, the game became something of a sleeper or cult favorite. The source code was released 2002.
So, if you don't know, Rise of the Triad focuses on the High-risk United Nations Taskforce whose sole purpose is to make sure that new, evil entities like the Third Reich don't rise again. It's set in the future. From the developers page:
After the fall of the Third Reich, the nations of the world vowed not to allow another regime to threaten world security ever again. Banding together they formed the United Nations, but unbeknownst to the general public a highly specialized black operations team was formed known only as the H.U.N.T (High-risk United Nations Taskforce). (or H.U.N.T) Their mission: to infiltrate, collect intelligence and destroy any possible future threat to global security. They’ve never been called upon…..Until now.
Apogee has stated that this game is more than a simple reboot. It includes multiple characters (5 in total), level editors, over-the-top modes, tons of secrets, the original and remixed soundtracks, and more.
The newly released screenshots showcase the Drunk Missile launcher and Split Missile Launcher, as well as one of the game's bosses—General Darian.
Rise of the Triad will be released sometime in the first quarter of 2013.
