Following Nintendo’s annual financial report, competitor Sony is chiming in with a report of its own. Market research company SuperData estimated that Sony would announce PlayStation 4 console sales totalling 60 million, which is still quite far from reaching the dizzying heights of the PlayStation 2. Despite this, Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad reports that PlayStation 4 is still in line with PlayStation 2 sales overall, and should move ahead if sales targets are met.
The earnings report confirms that Sony’s Game and Network Services is its best performing sector in terms of profit. CEO of SuperData Joost Van Dreunen added that Sony is in a much better position in comparison to Microsoft, with sales of the Xbox One only managing 33 million units worldwide. Speaking with MCV, Van Dreunen also mentioned that now that giants like Electronic Arts, Activision, Blizzard and Ubisoft are moving into the digital realm, “PlayStation stands to claim roughly two-thirds of the $7.8 billion digital console market”.
PlayStation 4 was the top selling console in the U.S. last December, largely helped via the introduction of the PS4 Pro.
