Kotaku reports that Nintendo is set to bring the iTunes experience, meaning browsing and purchasing music, to the 3DS. In Japan at least; the service is called Recochoku, which is short for Record-Chokusetsu or Record Direct.
Recochoku is not the brainchild of Nintendo; it's been around for a little while and the house that Mario built is simply putting out the welcome mat for it. And because it's cloud based, that same music can be accessed and even downloaded onto other platforms.
There is no word yet if songs are actually downloaded onto the 3DS or if it’s simply accessed via an app that talks to the cloud.
For years users have been asking for a more robust yet simplified user experience, especially when it comes to accessing and managing digital content.
Yesterday, Joystiq noted that Nintendo will be slashing their annual net profit outlook by 70 percent. It could be reasoned that one reason for Nintendo's losses is from people being dissatisfied with Nintendo's offerings and spending their money elsewhere.
In that case, the adoption of the Recochoku is definitely a step in the right direction. No word yet either if Nintendo has similar plans for the American or European marketplaces.
