The latest movement in the video playback has been focused on 4K. While 4K displays have been present for a few years now, there are more adopters of the format making the latest update to launch for Sony’s PlayStation 4 Pro all the more welcoming.
Announced through the official PlayStation Blog, Vice President of PlayStation Brand Marketing, John Koller has announced that the PlayStation 4 Pro will soon receive an update that will give support for 4K video playback on the console.
There are a few different ways that gamers can enjoy 4K video playback. For instance, owners of a home server will find that the PlayStation 4 pro will automatically show the server as a media option. Likewise, 4K videos saved in an MP4 format via a USB stick can be played on the Media Player app.
You might recall a previous update allowed Sony’s latest generation of consoles access to a USB storage device to save games and applications. Unfortunately, for gamers who already own a USB storage device for the use of saving video games and videos will not be able to further add 4K videos.
“Your home server will appear as a media option in the Player automatically, so finding your media is simple and quick. Just a reminder: USB storage that’s already been formatted as extended storage for your PS4 can only be used to save games and apps — it can’t be used to save and play videos.”
John Koller also made a statement regarding the PlayStation VR in regards to the latest update. Even though the PlayStation VR display only has a resolution that is 1920×1080, 4K VR-based videos on the headset will still look stunning by adding a bit more polish to the overall image quality.
