While the basics are easy to pick up, the battle system also has enough depth to keep you on your toes. A major part of battle strategy in Eternal Sonata revolves around the distinction between light and shadow. Not only do enemies dramatically morph depending on whether they’re standing in a light area or covered in shadow (a small flying bat in the light will transform into a gigantic scorpion in the shadow, for example), but your own party’s special attacks will vary depending on whether you’re in light or shadow. Shadow attacks are generally more powerful, while light attacks can either be offensive or healing. There are also status inflicting attacks that can cast a shadow on someone no matter what, preventing that character from using a much-needed healing attack, and vice versa.

Despite the flaws that it has, Eternal Sonata is still a visually stunning game with a charming story. Any Playstation 3 owner with a love for RPGs is recommended to pick up this title. The fact that it came out around the same time as Valkyria Chronicles and Fallout 3 should not stop people from picking up this game. If Eternal Sonata is a sign of things to come, then the Sony faithful can expect some great titles from the land of the Rising Sun.

The PS3 finally has a solid RPG and despite the fact that it is one that has been ported over from the 360 it’s worth checking out. The additional content is a nice incentive for folks who never played the game the first time around, and it extends the experience somewhat. If you’re wondering if the title is worth a double dip, I must say that it’s really not. The overall experience, as great as it is, is still identical to the game that was released about a year ago. Despite that, this game is still highly recommended and is not to be missed for any RPG lovers.

There are a few quirks along the way, however; for example, you may have heard about the historical narration that’s injected in the game’s story. Tying in the title’s plot with Chopin’s life might seem interesting, but it only serves to mess up the game’s pacing and end up being more boring than anything else. That said, the themes the game touches on are startlingly relevant, which, combined with the wonderful character development, negates any storytelling problems that may pop up

The first thing that gamers might not realize in regards to Eternal Sonata is how intriguing and ultimately surreal the narrative is. Although the game starts off in rather typical fashion, later plot points reveal a much more thought-provoking tale that begins to force the player into questioning dreams and reality. All the while, gamers are treated to some truly incredible music. The games soundtrack contains mostly original works, all of which deserve high praise, but some of Chopin’s own compositions are also included — along with fascinating biographical information that is displayed during the pieces.

The new dungeons are quite good and help extend the length a bit, though you should be aware that one of them is only available to you once you complete the game, which clocks in at under 35 hours. Even with the new content, though, Eternal Sonata is much the same game as before–which makes it one that you should play, if you haven’t already. Its lovely, gentle story and fun combat make for a heartwarming journey that will both draw you in and make you wish you didn’t have to leave.
