In addition to the fantastic campaign, there are two multiplayer modes in Warhammer 40K: Space Marine — Operations and Endless War. Operations is a PVE mode where your team of three marines will fight through a mission, choosing your class and loadout, while dealing with randomized events like in Vermintime or Darktide.
Endless War is a PVP mode where Space Marines battle Chaos Space Marines. This mode pits you against other players — and we recommend starting with the campaign or Operations to hone your skills and get used to the unique combat mechanics of Space Marine 2. You’ll need to juggle close-range and ranged combat to tackle the destroy the hated foes of the Imperium, but you can skip straight ahead if you’re eager to unlock your favorite Space Marine Chapters. Here’s what you need to know.
How To Access Operations & Endless War
Both online modes are available very early — or instantly if you really want to start playing with friends immediately. The campaign also becomes available for online cooperative play at the same time.
- Start a new game and complete the tutorial mission. After the mission, you’ll arrive at the Space Marine Battle Barge. Speak with the Captain and ride the elevator down to the hangar.
- Across from the blue ship that deploys you on campaign missions, interact with the Battle Map terminal to access all three modes. From here you can select missions in Operations and Maps to join in Endless War.
You can also choose to Skip Tutorial in the pause menu when starting a new game. You can skip in-game cutscenes whenever you wish and speed directly to the Battle Map.
- To invite friends, open the Edit Squad menu — the button will appear in the top-right corner.
From the Edit Squad menu, you can invite friends to your squad. Squads have up to three players. Crossplay is available and friends can play on all three modes. The campaign after the tutorial is fully coop and can be played with the friends in your squad. You won’t earn rewards or level up your marines when playing the campaign.
Is There Crossplay?
Yes, Crossplay is available for all versions of Space Marine 2. To use Crossplay, open the Edit Squad menu — you can generate invite codes and send the codes to your friends. By inputting the codes, they’ll join your squad. If you’re using the same platform, you can simply invite any online friend.
Why Do I Keep Disconnecting?
Some players are disconnecting from servers when playing online — this may be due to the influx of new players from launch. But if you’re still experiencing disconnects there are a few options you can true.
- Disable Online. If you’re playing the campaign or Operations while solo, you can play in Offline mode to avoid disconnects. Even if you’re playing solo, if Online mode is active, you can be disconnected at any time and forced to restart a checkpoint. You can disable Online from the main menu or after disconnecting.
- Disable Crossplay. Some players say that leaving Crossplay enabled is causing more disconnects and server errors. If you’re experiencing these issues constantly, try disabling crossplay — players online report faster server loading times and fewer connection problems.
Disconnecting in the middle of an Operation or a Campaign mission can be extremely annoying — so if you’re playing solo, I recommend turning off online mode until you’re ready to actually play online. By the time you’re done learning how to crush your foes like a Space Marine, the servers should hopefully be improved.
