#9. Cooked Food [Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild]
Sure, Megalixirs are rare items in Final Fantasy games, but a hard-to-cool meal that uses up some of your hardest-to-find ingredients in Breath of the Wild? Now that’s something you’re going to hang onto. The big Legend of Zelda adventure on the Nintendo Switch sends Link into a vast open-world environment with dozens of food items to find in the different regions. While teleporting is (mostly) easy, certain ingredients aren’t easy to find.
And cooking up powerful meals is a reward! You can create food that refills your stamina, your hearts, and gives you a huge buff to your attack power. But this isn’t just some random item you found on the ground. The only way to get more is to literally make more from your pot — and that can be a huge pain in the butt. Better to juts eat 50 apples instead of digging into those Salt-Grilled Prime Meat dinners.
#10. Humanity [Dark Souls]
In Demon’s Souls, they’re called Stone of Ephemeral Eyes — in Dark Souls, they’re just called Humanity. These are the items that restore your player character to full health. You see, in Dark Souls games, when you die you’re stuck with 50% health. To get back to 100%, you’re going to need to use items like Humanity. But, dying again will mean losing your 100% status! Thousands of Dark Souls players choose to march into death’s maw with 50% health instead of risking a wasted Humanity.
And Dark Souls makes things even more complicated. You can use multiple Humanity to increase your total, increasing your physical and magic resistances while improving Chaos Magic power. Only experienced players are ever going to do that, because on your first playthrough, all you can think about is totally whiffing a boss fight and losing your valuable humanity. It’s one of those items that absolutely helps, but we can’t just use them. Better to handicap yourself.
