10 Best Game Gimmicks That Made Good Games Better

January 6, 2021 by Kevin Thielenhaus

We’re going giddy for gimmicks.

Real-Time Destruction [Red Faction: Guerilla]

There’s nothing better than seeing the real-time results of your explosive antics in Red Faction: Guerilla, the greatest destruction game of all time. Previous games in the Red Faction series introduced deforming caverns and intense interior destruction, but nothing compares to the wreckage you can reap in Red Faction: Guerilla. Even the sequel Red Faction: Armageddon can’t compare.

You really have to experience the destruction firsthand to understand why it’s just so satisfying. Planting bombs and setting them all off to create a chain-reaction of simulated destruction is truly rewarding — buildings crack, buckle and crumble realistically, and bombs aren’t the only weapons you get. Rocket Launchers, Black Hole Generators and Mechs make destruction even more fun. Many games have gone one to simulate realistic demolition, it’s just too bad none of them make it so fun. Without the destruction, Red Faction: Guerilla wouldn’t be fondly remembered even now.

Mixtape Radio Station [Saints Row 3 / Saints Row 4]

One of the coolest features in Saints Row 3 / 4 is incredibly simple. It’s so simple, it’s kind of unbelievable that other games haven’t copied it. In both of these over-the-top open-world action games, you can create custom mixtape stations on the radio by selecting tracks you like the most from a list of all the other tracks in the game.

It’s such a handy solution! Sure you can mod custom radio stations into GTA games, but this gives you the power to take more control of your listening — and it’s available on consoles. Every game with radio stations should have this feature!
