The 15 Best New Survival Games Of 2021

2020 was a bit of a bust with the coronavirus health pandemic outbreak. This virus was the reason so many games got pushed back out of 2020 with developers transitioning to working remotely. However, this means that 2021 should be a rather filled year for video game releases. In this list, we’re going to showcase some of the most anticipated survival titles coming out in 2021.

#15 Wild

  • Developer: Wild Sheep Studio
  • Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
  • Platforms: PS4
  • Release: TBA
  • Co-op: TBA
  • Competitive Multiplayer: TBA

It’s anyone’s guess as to if WiLD will release into the market. This game has been talked about and shown off since 2014 and now that we’re approaching the end years of the PlayStation 4, rumors are saying WiLD may be bumped to a PlayStation 5 exclusive. Regardless, this survival action game is still one that gamers can’t wait to get their hands on. Overall, the world procedurally generated while players take the role of a man set in the prehistoric Neolithic period. Within the game, players will have to scavenge for food and items to stay alive, but there is also the added ability to seek out the help of animals within the wild to aid you in your journey.

Again, this game has been around for several years with no real big updates to the development process. Most will even label the game as a title suck in development hell, but so far there is no indication of it being killed off or cancelled. Perhaps this will be the year we’ll finally get new information and concrete release date.

#14 Icarus

  • Developer: RocketWerkz
  • Publisher: RocketWerkz
  • Platforms: PC
  • Release: TBA
  • Co-op: Online
  • Competitive Multiplayer: N/A

From the creator of DayZ comes Icarus. This is a new upcoming free to play survival title which puts players onto a newly discovered planet. Here companies can bid on sections of the land to mine for new exotic resources. However, being on a foreign planet, you’ll need to ensure that you are prepared for the dangers that are within the planet along with keeping vitals in check. This means having shelter, food, and water.

Likewise, there are different missions to take on which can become more challenging and longer to endure as you progress. To top it off, this does offer online cooperative gameplay support so you and a crew of friends can join together in the hunt for valuable goods.

#13 Outpost: Glacier

  • Developer: Doomlord Interactive
  • Publisher: Doomlord Interactive
  • Platforms: PC
  • Release: 2021
  • Co-op: Online
  • Competitive Multiplayer: TBA

Outpost Glacier is an upcoming game from indie development team Doomlord Interactive. In this game, players work as a member of ApolloCorp who is sent to work on an abandoned northern outpost. The problem here is that the outpost is surrounded by frozen tundra. This means to survive you’ll need to gather resources and scavenge for food, all while ensuring the outpost can sustain power throughout the night. We’re eager to see more about this game and fortunately, you can even play an early alpha build right now through Itch. However, with that said, this alpha build is only a single player so you’ll have to wait a bit longer before you can enjoy this game as a multiplayer experience.

#12 Smalland

In this game, players are transformed into a size of a small pebble where you will find that the world has become even more dangerous than ever before. To figure out what is going on, you’ll have to go through a deep journey but as you can probably guess you’ll need to gather resources. With new predators now lurking about in the woods, it’s a battle to keep safe and your vital signs in the green. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t have a specific release date attached quite yet, but when it does launch, we can expect not only cooperative online gameplay support but PvP as well.

  • Publisher: Neostream Interactive
  • Platforms: PS5, PS4, PC, XBO, NS
  • Release: July 2021
  • Co-op: Online

Little Devil Inside will probably catch your attention immediately from a visual standpoint. It’s a rather unique looking 3D action-adventure survival title from indie studio Neostream. Overall the game puts players into the task of hunting down and taking out creatures that lurk in the world. From what the developers have claimed, Little Devil Inside kind of takes on the same mechanics as the Harvest Moon titles.

Players are hunting down creatures as a job and it’s the everyday life you’re watching unfold. From going on missions, gathering resources to enjoying the weekend, it looks as if Little Devil Inside is a game that mixes survival and simulation mechanics.

#10 Sons of Forest

  • Developer: Endnight Games
  • Publisher: Endnight Games
  • Platforms: PC
  • Release: 2021
  • Co-op: Online
  • Competitive Multiplayer: TBD

The Forest from Endnight Games was a survival title as players were stuck in the woods looking for a means of escape. It was a mixture of survival and the constant threat of hostile enemies that left fans enjoying the game. There are still players discovering this title today. Now a new sequel is in the works called Sons of the Forest. Players are seemingly taking a trek back into the woods as a means to hunt down the supernatural elements that lurk within it.

From what we can tell so far, there is more emphasis on survival with the player having to gather various resources such as cutting down trees. That’s added on top of the hostile enemies that are lurking within the woods. You’ll find that they can not only attack you but also destroy your fortified base which means all that hard work might have to be completely redone before nightfall hits.

#9 Occupy Mars: The Game

  • Developer: Pyramid Games
  • Publisher: Pyramid Games, PlayWay S.A.
  • Release: TBA
  • Co-op: N/A
  • Competitive Multiplayer: N/A

Occupy Mars: The Game is a simulation survival game. As you can probably already tell from the title, players are thrown onto Mars where the goal is to sustain life. This is done in a few different ways. You’ll need to gather enough resources to build up different structures and from there you need to ensure there’s enough power to keep the different places built online.

From mining for goods and building solar panels to get power, this is a mix of simulation and strategic gameplay. It might not be for everyone, but for those that enjoy the wonders of space and playout what life could potentially be like when we start to colonize on the planet, Occupy Mars: The Game might be worth the pick up when it launches hopefully later this year.

#8 Dream Engines: Nomad Cities

  • Developer: Suncrash
  • Publisher: Suncrash
  • Platforms: PC
  • Release: March 2021
  • Co-op: N/A
  • Competitive Multiplayer: N/A

Dream Engines: Nomad Cities is a unique style of survival game. In this title, players are forced to survive a new post apocalyptic world by crafting cities that can take flight. Through new technologies, players can craft up their city and prepare to venture around the world for additional resources. Meanwhile, there are horrific monsters that lay within the lands below so gathering resources will require skill and timing.

Of course, if you built up enough resources then you might find it possible to keep on the ground as you use different defensive systems to fend off any hostile groups that flood into the area. Currently, the game is slated to launch in March of this year, 2021, but it might be an early access title for about two according to the Steam digital storefront page.

#7 Valheim

  • Developer: Iron Gate AB
  • Publisher: Coffee Stain Publishing
  • Platforms: PC
  • Release: February 2, 2021
  • Co-op: Online
  • Competitive Multiplayer: N/A

If you ever wanted to spend some time in a Norse-inspired purgatory then you’re in luck! Valheim throws players into this world where you, a once Viking warrior, end up in this purgatory where you must attempt to survive within the world, craft weapons, build up your shelter, and take on enemies that not even Odin himself would attempt to face. For those that might find the game to be a bit dated, this was done on purpose as the developers wanted to craft a game that looks like the styles of 3D gaming we would have seen during the days of the original PlayStation console. Furthermore, when this game comes out in early access, players can expect a title that can be enjoyed either completely solo or with some friends online.

#6 Bum Simulator

  • Developer: Ragged Games
  • Publisher: Ragged Games, PlayWay
  • Platforms: PC
  • Release: 202 1
  • Co-op: N/A
  • Competitive Multiplayer: N/A

Bum Simulator is certainly a wacky game on this list. Players step into the role of a man who lives on the streets but your journey is only beginning. You could adapt, survive and become a living legend according to the developers so from this game. The gameplay looks a bit silly, where players are going through a crazy world in search of goods to sell at the pawn store, gathering gear, making up a shelter, and using their inner bum powers to defeat your enemies. This could be anything from a powerful burp through alcohol alchemy or sending your pigeons to attack a target. At the moment, this game is slated to release sometime this year as a Steam early access title.

#5 Dead Matter

  • Developer: Quantum Integrity Software Inc.
  • Publisher: Quantum Integrity Software Inc.
  • Platforms: PC
  • Release: 2021
  • Co-op: Online
  • Competitive Multiplayer: Online

Dead Matter has quite a long history. There’s been several delays and crowdfunding campaigns to get this title up and running. Fortunately, it looks like we should at least see this game leave alpha and head into early access within 2021. For those of you who haven’t heard about Dead Matter yet, this is a new open-world survival horror type of game. Players will be dropped into a post-apocalyptic world where zombies flood the world. Meanwhile, players are left with scavenging for items and seeking shelter. It’s a mix of the video games you’re probably already familiar with such as Escape From Tarkov or DayZ.

There’s a lot of working with other players or fighting against hostile players that are seeking resources on your character. The developers behind this game, Quantum Integrity Software is also making a game that puts a lot of focus on customization. There are plans to bring full modding support to the Steam workshop so there’s the potential of other players leading a hand into crafting something unique for Dead Matter when it finally does launch.

Natural disasters have begun to threaten the survival of all living life on the planet and being a sugar glider, you will need to carefully maneuver around the world to stay alive.

Overall, the game focuses on making your way to avoid being devoured by the animals who reside at the top of the food chain. However, being a small sugar glider, you can glide, jump, climb and agility. Created by an indie development studio known as Breaking Walls, there are several industry veterans attached to the project that has worked on several big AAA video game franchises such as Assassin’s Creed to Far Cry.

#3 Undying

  • Developer: Vanimals
  • Publisher: Vanimals
  • Platforms: NS, PS4, XBO, PC
  • Release: 2021
  • Co-op: N/A
  • Competitive Multiplayer: N/A

Undying is an emotional roller coaster of a survival game. This title puts players into a zombie apocalypse where you take the role of a mother by the name of Anling. Anling is bitten and has become infected, but before turning she has to fight to keep alive long enough to teach her young son Cody, all the skills he’ll need to stay alive in this world. Players will not only have to manage their daily routine of scavenging for items, but ensuring that they have enough resources to craft, feed, and take care of both individuals.

A good part of this game is teaching Cody various skills and ensuring that he knows what to do for various situations that may come up. After all, there will come a point in which Anling will not have the ability to continue on and must rely on Cody until her time comes to an end. While the game was originally slated for a 2020 launch, it has since been pushed towards a release in 2021.

#2 The Day Before

  • Developer: FNTASTIC
  • Publisher: MYTONA
  • Platforms: PC
  • Release: TBD
  • Co-op: Online
  • Competitive Multiplayer: Online

The Day Before looks quite a bit like The Division in a lot of ways. This is an upcoming MMO title that set during a pandemic of the United States of America. Humanity has fallen leaving nothing but shells of cities and vehicles behind. Now a virus threat has flooded across the world infecting humans into mindless zombies. Meanwhile the few that are left are at battle with each other for the few and far between resources available in the world. Players will drop into this game with the goal of simply survival. You’ll be able to explore the open world in an attempt to find goods, make upgrades and progress further into the world. Meanwhile, there’s the threat of other hostile players or groups also lurking about. It looks to be a tense battle as you venture into a seemingly abandoned building only to find hordes of undead roaming around.

#1 State of Decay 3

  • Developer: Undead Labs
  • Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios
  • Platofrms: XBO, PC, XSX/S,
  • Release: TBA
  • Co-op: TBA
  • Competitive Multiplayer: TBA

State of Decay has been a popular survival zombie video game and for the past two installments, it’s been a focus for players to survive various hazards in the world. However, it looks like the development studio, Undead Labs, wants to turn things up a bit from what we can tell from the cinematic trailer released for the game. At the time of writing this description, there is only one trailer for State of Decay 3 and it doesn’t offer much in terms of what we can officially expect. However, it does show a snowy landscape which might indicate that we’ll have to rely on some more survival resources when we explore out in the open such as freezing temperatures. Furthermore, it looks like animals might make a play in State of Decay 3. Again, nothing official has been released at the moment, but the trailer shows a mutated deer munching down on a fresh kill. We very well may have to face off against undead animals as well which will really add something a bit more unique with this installment of the series.
