Nintendo Switch: Price, Release Date, Specs, Games & Everything Else You Need To Know

January 16, 2017 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Before you buy, check out every feature of the Nintendo Switch — how much it costs, how it works, when it releases, and all the games confirmed so far.

The Switch is the culmination of Nintendo’s entertainment DNA, according to the Nintendo Switch Presentation 2017 — but what does that mean exactly? We’re here to answer that question.

The Nintendo Switch isn’t your standard console. It’s a hybrid; both a console and a handheld. It comes with two controllers, but those two controllers can snap together to form one single controller. You can take the Switch Console with you, plug it into the TV dock, or use the kickstand to play with friends and family anywhere. It’s designed for people that have never played a video game, and for hardcore fans. There’s a lot to unpack when it comes to the Switch. Let’s get started with the basic overview.

The Nintendo Switch — The Basics

  • Launch Date: March 3rd, 2017 (US / Canada / Hong Kong / Japan / Canada  / Major European Countries)
  • Retail Price: $299.99

The Switch is not Region-Locked. Software is available in all regions.

The Nintendo Switch is a hybrid console / handheld device that allows you to play games on your TV or on-the-go. When plugged into the Switch Dock, the Switch Console displays on your TV — remove the console from the dock, and you can play anywhere.

The Nintendo Switch console features a touchscreen, and the included Joy-Con controllers can plug into the Joy-Con Dock to form a standard controller. The Joy-Con [Left] and Joy-Con [Right] also function like independent controllers that can be attached to the Switch Console, turning the tablet into a handheld device.

The standard price for Nintendo Switch games is $59.99, although certain titles like 1-2-Switch will be available at the lower price point of $49.99.
