GTA Trilogy And Red Dead Redemption Are Now In Red Cases On Nintendo Switch

September 22, 2025 by Ryan Parreno

This might be to differentiate them from Switch 2 games.

Rockstar has made a change to their Nintendo Switch games.

What We Wanted

Last month, Rockstar took over publishing Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition on the Nintendo Switch. This led to a firestorm of speculation.

Fans hoped that Rockstar’s rerelease would come with the new version of this collection made by Rockstar Australia (FKA Video Games Deluxe) on mobile platforms for Netflix.

What We Got

Unfortunately, it turned out that this would only be the same version of the game made by Grove Street Games. That collection’s poor state isn’t entirely Grove Street’s fault. Rockstar did not give them the time and budget to make sure it was up to expectations.

But worse, they would still be a code-in-the-box, instead of the complete versions of these games in Game Card. So, there’s nothing to see here for gamers who were hoping to get better versions of these games now.

But there’s another seemingly less important change.

A Bright Cherry Red

As reported by Rockstar Intel, Rockstar released new copies of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition and Red Dead Redemption on Nintendo Switch on the default bright red cases. You can see pictures of these cases below.

When Nintendo was publishing these games, they provided unique clear cases. Nintendo may have wanted these games to stand out in stores.

With Nintendo’s and Rockstar’s agreement ending, Rockstar went back to the default cases.

Rockstar and Nintendo did not provide any reasons for this change, but maybe it isn’t that deep.

Maybe it’s as simple as Rockstar using what was available to them. If Nintendo was paying for clear cases, Rockstar was simply not interested.

Rockstar Intel did bring up something that makes sense. With the Switch 2 out in the market, Rockstar may have wanted to make sure that their games aren’t confused with Switch 2 games.

Take-Two has released some Switch 2 games already in NBA 2K26 and WWE 2K25. There does not seem to be any falling out between the two companies. This could be Rockstar’s prerogative to avoid customer confusion.

We’re Still Waiting For Rockstar To Confirm THAT Rumor

Last month, there was a rumor that Red Dead Redemption 2 was finally coming to consoles. That includes the Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

It was also supposed to have been announced and released in August, which did not happen. But that doesn’t mean that the rumor is completely untrue or it isn’t happening anymore.

There may be an unknown reason for a delay, and we’ll get the announcement and release later. There’s definitely upside to Rockstar bringing their AAAs to the Switch 2 now that it’s technically feasible.

And of course, fans have been waiting on that Red Dead Redemption 2 console port for years now. So let’s hope that they do have an announcement like that coming sooner rather than later.
