Doom: The Dark Ages Physical Disc Reportedly Doesn’t Contain Full Game

May 12, 2025 by Dennis Patrick

You’ll have to download most of the game.

We’re just days away from the next big AAA release in the marketplace. We’ll finally get our hands on Doom: The Dark Ages this week. The game is set to arrive both digitally and physically. While it’s always nice to see physical releases, you’ll still have to connect online when you toss this game disc into your console.

A new report has surfaced online from DoesItPlay, which is all about determining if a game is actually playable or if issues such as unavailable servers might arise. Today, we’re discovering that the website has been able to confirm that the game is not fully available on the game disc. So, there’s still the obstacle of having to connect online, at least initially.

It’s noted that only a small portion of the game files are actually on the physical disc. For instance, the PlayStation 5 version of the game only contains 85 MB on the disc. So, upon launching the game, you’ll get notified of a required online update. This would essentially be the entire game build added to your storage drive.

That said, you can enjoy the game offline after the download. It’s worth noting that the Xbox Series X version of the game does feature a little more data on the disc than the PlayStation 5. However, it’s not enough to avoid a mandatory update online, as the game disc just contains 300 MB of game files.

Again, we’re not far from getting our hands on the game. Currently, Doom: The Dark Ages is set to release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S platforms on May 15, 2025. You can even take a look at the launch trailer right here. Meanwhile, if you haven’t kept tabs on the game, we are getting essentially an origin story of Doom Slayer, inspired partly by a Batman comic book series.

If you’re looking for more insight on the game, we have you covered! We recently published our Before You Buy video coverage of the game, which you can view below.
